The display preferably provided as an LCD-display has dimensions such that with it approximately one page of a book can be illustrated at normal size, this display being integrated in a flat, frame-like housing.

Zuviel versprochen, zuwenig geliefert.

The lawsuit claims that he could only connect to the fast 3G network a fraction of the time, and that it did not provide full and continual service.

Soweit so unzuverlässig.

fring.jpgnimbuzz.jpgtruphone.jpg

  • Mindestens 2 CPUs lieber 4
  • 1TB Traffic inklusive
  • keine 2 Man Show Anbieter
  • Hosting in Deutschland

  • Quadcore Opteron
  • ein einfaches Hardware Raid - aber immerhin
  • 4GB Speicher
  • Fujitsu Siemens 19″ 2HE Gerät mit beindruckend gutem Handbuch
  • Remote Management Interface (IPMI)
  • 5000GB Traffic inklusive (100MBit Anbindung)

Also: Bestellt!

  • Fileserver
  • Diverser Kleinkram - SVN, Jabber,…

sdparm -s WCE=1 /dev/sg0 sdparm -s WCE=1 /dev/sg1

(network-script 'Fridu-network.script LAN:192.168.1.1:255.255.255.0') (vif-script 'vif-tp bridge="LAN"')

vif         = [  'ip=192.168.1.4,mac=00:16:3e:26:5e:0b,bridge=LAN,vifname=l-web',  'ip=85.25.178.202,mac=00:16:3e:7d:82:65,bridge=none,vifname=e-web' ]

auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address $$_öffentliche_IP_$$ netmask 255.255.255.255 ## Netzmaske ist wichtig up /sbin/route add default dev eth1 up /sbin/route add default gw $$_öffentliche_IP_der_dom0_$$

Ist schon fast ne Woche her.

    ExpiresActive On     # 1 Monat aufheben     ExpiresByType image/gif A2592000     ExpiresByType image/png A2592000     ExpiresByType image/jpeg A2592000     ExpiresByType application/x-javascript A2592000     ExpiresByType text/javascript A2592000     ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash A2592000     ExpiresByType text/css A2592000     ExpiresByType application/rss+xml A900     ExpiresDefault "modification plus 1 hour"

 CacheEnable mem / # Max Cache size in kb (32MB) MCacheSize 32000 MCacheMaxObjectCount 2000 # Least recently used MCacheRemovalAlgorithm LRU MCacheMinObjectSize 1 # Max Object size in byte (50kB) MCacheMaxObjectSize 50000

# Gekürzter Auszug RewriteCond supercache/%{HTTP_HOST}/$1/index.html -f RewriteRule ^(.*) supercache/%{HTTP_HOST}/$1/index.html [L]

~~~
Ich hoffe ich konnte euch einen kleinen Einblick in meine Welt geben. Hoffentlich kann der eine oder andere davon profitieren. Am tollsten wäre natürlich wenn ihr noch Anregungen oder Fragen in den Kommentaren abgebt. Ich steige gerne in eine Diskussion ein. Ursprünglich wollte ich noch ein paar mehr Dinge ansprechen (z.B. das Monitoring). Aber das wird wohl in einem weiteren Artikel kommen. Ist lang genug geworden. ~~~ Thorsten
wunder radio1.jpgwunder radio2.jpgwunder radio3.jpg
Meine persönlichen Erfahrungen habe ich bislang mit allRadio (0.79 €; App Store-Link) und FStream (kostenlos; App Store-Link) gesammelt und hier bereits aufgeschrieben. Jetzt durfte ich Wunder Radio (4.99 €; App Store-Link) ausprobieren und reiche meine Praxiserlebnis nach, da das Programm von ‘Weather Underground’ eine andere Preiskategorie und technische Herangehensweise anvisiert.
Wunder Radio fragt beim ersten Starten ob es eure derzeitige Geo-Position ermitteln darf. So werden lokale Radiosender aufgespürt. Die Auswahl ist mit über 30.000 Stationen beziffert und natürlich nicht regional beschränkt.
Als alteingesessener Bremer höre ich so von Zeit zu Zeit aus München trotzdem gerne den Radiosender Bremen Vier. In Zusammenarbeit mit RadioTime findet die iPhone-Applikation tausende von Internet-Streams. Sowohl die Buffering-Zeit als auch die Bitrate können während des Hörens angepasst werden. Eingebettet ist der Stream in ein praxistaugliches und optisch ansprechendes Interface.
Das Programm setzt den Musikstrom auch mit ausgeschaltetem Display fort, die Applikation darf jedoch nicht beendet werden. Soweit so bekannt. Mitgedacht wurde bei der Installation des eingebauten Web-Browser. Um kurz eine Webseite anzusurfen, müsst ihr die Applikation und damit euren Musikgenuss nicht beenden. So können zu den abgespielten Titeln auch dessen Interpret und Album nachgeschlagen werden.
Leider lassen sich derzeit noch keine eigenen Stream-Adressen eingeben. Durch Empfehlungen ‘wer diesen Radiosender gehört hat, hört auch…’ findet ihr aber bestimmt ein Angebot zum persönlichen Musikgeschmack. Durch die flexiblen Einstellungsmöglichkeiten seitd ihr auch bei schlechtem Empfang gerüstet um eine Live-Berichterstattung, aktuelle Nachrichten-Sendungen oder den unterschiedlichsten Musikgeschmack zu befriedigen.
Wer die Schlagwörtern ‘Dr. Wily’, ‘Dr. Light’ und ‘Rockman’ dem korrekten Videospiel zuordnen kann, ist mit diesem Artikel thematisch an der richtigen Stelle. Leider, und soviel sei gleich vorweggeschickt, lockt ‘Mega Man II’ für das iPhone ausschließlich die absoluten Enthusiasten in den App Store.
Wenn überhaupt.
Die Mega Man-Franchise ist bekannt - wenn nicht sogar berüchtigt - für ihr einzigartiges Spielprinzip: Der klassische Plattformer bei dem eine kleine springende Figur von links nach rechts - durch einen 2D-Plattenbau streift, trifft am Schluss auf einen Endgegner.
Soweit so simple!
megaman.jpgmegaman2.jpg
Dieses - so einfache - aber grandiose Spielprinzip hat bereits die Früchte von über 100 Lizenz-Versionen zu Tage gefördert. Bei den guten Titeln der Serie durften sich am Schwierigkeitsgrad die Zähne blank gebissen werden.
Für die App Store-Version hat Capcom diesbezüglich Mist gebaut. Zwar sind drei unterschiedliche Schwierigkeitsstufen anzuwählen, jedoch wurde das “gameplay for the iPhone experience rebalanced”.
Und das ist nun mal wirklich Quatsch. Wenn ihr in keine Abgründe stürzt, ist eure vollständig geladene Lebensleiste kaum zu minimieren.
Ihr trefft den neben auch stehenden Gegner nicht? Lauft doch einfach durch ihn durch! Endgegner-Kämpfe dürfen ohne jegliche Rücksicht auf Verluste innerhalb von Sekunden gewonnen werden.
-> http://blip.tv/file/1929592 Video-Link*
Nein. Obwohl Sound und Grafik eine schöne Rückreise in die (Kindheits-)Vergangenheit sind, bleibt Mega Man II auf dem iPhone insgesamt zu unrund. Absolute Fans ärgern sich sicherlich nicht für 14 Level 4€ zu investiert zu haben, ein antiquierter GameBoy plus Modul verspricht jedoch weitaus mehr Spielspaß.
New Zealand’s dollar blows by most currency pairs this morning!
This morning the theme of the day so far is NZD strength as NZD/JPY is up 3.11% on the day (or 171 pips) and NZD/USD is up 2.34% or 133 pips on the day so far.  The biggest losers on the day are getting dragged down by NZD too: EUR/NZD down 2.09% and AUD/NZD down 1.40%. So [...]
This morning the theme of the day so far is NZD strength as NZD/JPY is up 3.11% on the day (or 171 pips) and NZD/USD is up 2.34% or 133 pips on the day so far.
The biggest losers on the day are getting dragged down by NZD too: EUR/NZD down 2.09% and AUD/NZD down 1.40%.
So there’s where your momentum is.
And a 2nd runner up is the Aussie dollar….AUD/JPY is up 1.66% on the day or 113 pips.
Also, you could say that the “commodity currencies” are rising up against the yen today (NZD/JPY, AUD/JPY, CAD/JPY).
You can see the link here: http://www.forextradingblog.com/what-is-going-on-in-the-market/two-long-term-potential-breakouts-about-to-happen/ that showed the NZD/JPY was likely to breakout soon. Well, that was back at 49.63. Now we are at 51.47 (up close to 200 pips) with more to go.
Next target is 55 to 60 which we should see in the upcoming days to weeks.  So get ready for more “kiwi” upside overall. Yes, there will be pull backs along the way, but overall we should be heading upward to these targets mentioned above.
Also, EUR/JPY is up about 130 pips from the chart snap shot in that article as well.
The initial thoughts for these trades were the recent diving fundamentals in Japan…but the breakout coming I saw from a technical perspective on their daily charts.
Soldiers take part in an operation to capture drug kingpin Hector Huerta Rios in the suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia in Monterrey, northern Mexico March 24, 2009. Soldiers on Tuesday captured Huerta Rio from the Beltran Leyva cartel who is accused of the killing of a police chief in this industrial city. Huerta Rios was seized along with five persons, weapons and money at his car dealership.
MEXICO CITY (AFP) — A suspected drug cartel hitman accused of organizing an attack on the US consulate in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey in October has been arrested by security forces, said President Felipe Calderon.
“The Mexican army has arrested Sigifredo Najera, aka El Canicon, (who was) directly responsible for the torture and killing of soldiers and the attack on the US consulate,” Calderon announced late Friday.
In a boost for Calderon, Mexico on Thursday arrested the son of top Sinaloan kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who is wanted in the United States.
El Mayo runs the ruthless Sinaloa coalition along with the country’s most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman. Last week, Forbes Magazine estimated Guzman’s wealth at $1 billion.
In a recent post I asked what you readers chose as your preferred security and maintenance tools. These are the applications you consider indispensable when trying to keep your systems in top running shape and secure from the variety of potential attacks and intrusions from nefarious entities found on the intarwebs!
Here’s my list of applications that I used even today as I was cleaning up my family’s desktop PC.
ccleaner
CCleaner which is short for “CRAP” Cleaner. It does a great job of finding all the hidden pieces of installed applications that sometimes don’t get removed with the program’s default uninstall function.
revo_box
Revo Uninstaller is very similar to CCleaner, but I choose to take advantage of both as an option in case one just won’t get rid of something. I usually run one, followed by the other to just insure that there are non remnants of anything I’m wanting to make sure I get rid of in the end.
adaware-box
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free is a great tool for finding any malware, trojans, hijack apps and other annoying little critters that love getting into our systems and mucking everything up.
windows-live-onecare
Windows Live OneCare has been my preferred option for real-time antivirus and malware protection on my systems and others. Recent news that Microsoft will be nixing their OneCare product may lead me to be looking for a replacement and free alternative in the future. Microsoft will be releasing a free option of their own, but I’ll wait and see how it looks before making a choice. I’m interested in what free antivirus applications you all recommend.
belarc
Belarc Advisor isn’t a tool to remove much of anything, but it provides a great resource for quickly cataloging and finding out what’s on your system and how you stand on a variety of security fronts.
Perhaps Greatest PC Maintenance Tool Ever
I was reminded today of one of the odd tools we use on a regular basis that most people would think is absolutely meaningless or at least not even worthy of being called a PC maintenance tool. However, we begin using this little device immediately with every new machine we purchase and begin using.
I’ve also been known to ask my clients to make use of this very item as a great way to keep their machine running as needed and utilities available when needed for their machine as well.
Image: Product image from Ziploc website
Image: Product image from Ziploc website
Yep, that’s it! Ziploc bags!
Now I realize it’s not glamorous or some new whizz-bang device or software app you’ve just got to have, but here’s how it works and works perfectly.
When you get a new system, put all the software, licenses, CD-ROMs and perhaps even instruction books related to that machine in a single Ziploc bag and label it with the name of the computer or model or something. Just something to clearly help you see which bag belongs to which computer.
Now, anytime you install a new piece of software on the computer, put a copy of the installation disc in this bag. In the event of a crash or a needed reinstall of an application you’ve got everything you need to get back up and running as quickly as possible. No searching for the discs you need with the drivers you can’t find because the discs are somewhere else.
Something else I do is also use the Belarc Advisor website to get a computer inventory of the machine and keep an updated copy of that printed off and folded in the Ziploc bag too.
Are you living a life of ABUNDANCE ?
This Friday 3/13/09 I will be co-hosting a free event at my office:
Here is their blurb:
People who are serious about getting out of the rat race and have a desire to model a system the rich have used for years should come and learn!
This game is very similar to Cash Flow 101- it’s got a spiritual and more philosophical twist to it. It takes in the laws of the universe, like the law of attraction and applies to our financial picture.
If you believe in paying it forward and investing in the best piece of real estate (the 6 inches between your ears), then this event is for you!
Also, a special guest speaker, the creator of the game, the genius himself, Brandon Boardwater will be here to present his game & give us the opportunity to own our very own game as well.
There are always some advantages to using a local attorney, but sometimes a more generic document is just fine and will save some money.
I have read various Nolo press books and really like their clean, direct style of explaining legal issues. Click the link above and then search for any legal-related subject.
They also have free content such as podcasts about foreclosures and other subjects.
It’s worth a look.
Here is an exceprt from the California Association of Realtors publication
” Foreclosure Scams and the Foreclosure Consultants law”
I. INTRODUCTION
REALTORS® commonly consider the filing of a notice of default as the beginning of the foreclosure
process. However, it may also be the start of something sinister. The public recording of a notice of
default can act as a beacon to unscrupulous people who, under the guise of offering assistance,
seek to take advantage of homeowners in distress. To protect homeowners in foreclosure,
California’s foreclosure consultant law strictly regulates the activities of people who perform
foreclosure-related services, including real estate agents to a limited extent.
This legal article discusses the issues surrounding foreclosure-related scams, with special attention
given to the ways that REALTORS® and their clients can distinguish between legitimate and illegal
enterprises. This article also provides REALTORS® with legal and practical guidelines for
complying with the foreclosure consultant law.
II. FORECLOSURE-RELATED SCAMS
IV. Additional Information (Questions 48 to 50)
Home Page > Legal > 2008 Q&As > Foreclosure Scams and the Foreclosure Consultant Law
A A foreclosure-related scam is a loose term for fraud, deceit, or trickery perpetrated against
homeowners facing foreclosure or others involved in the foreclosure process. With the rise in
foreclosures in the mid-2000s, foreclosure-related scams have exploded onto the real estate scene.
Some con artists offer to help homeowners in foreclosure, but in truth, merely intend to dupe the
distressed homeowners out of their money or property (see, more specifically, Question 5). Other
scams target real estate agents, investors, buyers, lenders, tenants, or other people involved in the
foreclosure process.
Q 2. How could someone fall victim to a foreclosure-related scam?
A A scam artist generally knows which victims to target and which buttons to push. Homeowners
facing foreclosure are highly vulnerable to scams. They are often unable to comprehend or get help
for the complicated legal, financial, and tax issues surrounding foreclosures, short sales, loan
modifications, and bankruptcies. Moreover, they often experience difficulty handling the stress and
stigma of possibly losing their homes through foreclosure. Because homeowners are likely to
consider purchasing a home as one of the most important things that they have ever done, the
anxiety from possibly losing that home may cause them to make bad decisions. Some homeowners
are specifically targeted by scam artists because they are perceived as easy prey, such as people
who are elderly, have language barriers, have limited resources, or lack knowledge. Given all these
circumstances, homeowners in foreclosure can easily succumb to a scam artist’s lure of a quick fix.
As a victim of the Community Home Savers scam discussed in Question 6 said, “When you’re down
and out you’ll believe anything.”
Aside from homeowners, real estate agents and others involved in the foreclosure process are also
vulnerable to scams, especially given the financial strain brought about by a down real estate
market. Some agents merely get caught in the crossfire between the scam artist and homeowner in
foreclosure. Others are reeled in by design because their participation may facilitate or lend
legitimacy to the fraudulent schemes. Agents are also targeted for their leads as they are often the
first point of contact for a homeowner in distress, such as outfits that claim they will do short sale
consulting. Agents may also get tricked into paying for bogus foreclosure related marketing tools,
farming lists, training seminars, coaching services, and other products or services.
Q 3. Is there a simple way to detect if someone is a scam artist?
A No. Outwardly, scam artists do not act or appear dastardly. On the contrary, the typical scam
artists look nice and clean-cut, and they seem kind, helpful, patient, and trustworthy. Their
purported companies or organizations often have names that sound altruistic, such as Community
Home Savers or Housing Assistance Services (see Question 6).
Scam artists commonly engage in “affinity marketing” tactics which means they attempt to lure
people by being, or pretending to be, members of the same racial, religious, social, or other group
as their victims. For example, a scam artist may claim to be in the military and use military terms
and mannerisms in an attempt to befriend someone in the military. Or another scammer may join a
church to gain the trust of other members of that church before attempting to defraud them. Scam
artists may also use many other tactics, such as claiming to be conducting official business for a
government entity, claiming to be a non-profit organization, or offering a money-back guarantee, just
to name a few.
Q 4. When dealing with someone, what are the red flags of a foreclosure-related scam to
watch out for?
A Homeowners in foreclosure and their real estate agents should be wary when dealing with
someone who does any of the following:
• Asks for money upfront before providing any service;
• Asks for payment only in the form of cash, cashier’s check, or wire transfer;
• Asks for a transfer of title or an interest in the property;
• Gives an unqualified promise to stop foreclosure or other assurances;
• Offers to buy a home for a price above its market value;
• Asks for something to be done immediately without delay;
• Asks for the homeowner to give a power of attorney;
• Asks for signatures on a grant deed or deed of trust;
• Asks for signatures without giving homeowner a lot of time to review the documents;
• Asks for signatures on a document that has lines left blank;
• Fails to provide copies of documents signed;
• Refuses or fails to provide an oral promise in writing;
• Instructs a homeowner to make mortgage payments to someone other than the lender; or
• Instructs a homeowner not to discuss the situation with the lender, housing counselor,
accountant, attorney, family, friends, or others.
Why would any sane person buy a home in the Bay Area?
Yes, home values have dropped, significantly,painfully, and quickly. Measured by “affordability index”,  rent/value ratios, or compared to national averages we are still 50% too high.
But,
There are a couple of reasons, and they are so pervasive that it’s sometimes hard for us to fully appreciate it.
Diversity
Diversity in people and culture of course. but that’s easy to see. I often travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to check on my investment properties. There is a stark, jolting difference between the racial makeup of people in the Tulsa airport compared to Oakland airport. I arrive back home at OAK and feel at home. Tulsa is great, but the Bay Area reflects the beauty the world.
We also have incredible diversity of cultural opportunities. We have great museums, parks, forests, beaches, trails, etc. (be sure to so to the new California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate park). My children go to Chinese school on Fridays, I make pottery in Walnut Creek, we can go to Chinatown for Dim Sum. The Realtors in my office speak something like 15 different languages.
From a Realtor’s perspective the diversity that really counts is in the real estate. It’s possible to find any sort of home, from classic craftsman to funky modern. I can show clients big city urban or horse country rural. All in one day. It’s really spectacular.
I recently have been looking on Alameda Island for a client. There are neighborhoods with Craftsman, Victorians, and all sots of fantastic choices.
Comfort
We can enjoy our homes inside and out. When you look at the number of days we can sit outside compared to most parts of the US our “home price/days-sitting-in-the-sun” index is better than almost anywhere. As I write this (Dec 6th) my son is sitting on our deck in a short sleeved shirt.
We love to complain when home prices get too high to afford.
We complain even more when they drop in half.
Still, when you look at the whole lifestyle package, homes here are a bargin.
I haven’t seen this much buyer activity for at least 3 years.
We are reaching a price point in many areas where it’s cheaper to own than to rent. We haven’t been there for 5 years.
Certainely nobody knows when real estate in the East Bay will start to appreciate again. My current buyers are all long-term thinkers and are buying properties which make sense today, even if they do not go up in value.
This week I spent a lot of time learning about septic systems, public sewer connections, and some related issues. I drove to 2 separate government offices in 2 separate cities to get first-hand information. My Client is interested in a home with an old septic system.
You probably do not need a Realtor to help you buy a home if you have the time to do this sort of research on your own.
You probably do not need a Realtor if you can use this sort of information to rationally evaluate a property, and consider all risks before you buy something. Most Buyers get emotionally involved in the house, and lose site of potential, future problems.
You probably do not need a Realtor if you understand the limits of California real estate disclosure laws, and can find ways to get necessary information before you get the keys.
You probably do not need a Realtor if you know how to package a REO offer in a way that the bank will like.
You probably do not need a Realtor if you know how to get the best possible price, and terms even if information about the property is incomplete.
You probably do not need a Realtor if you already have a good one.
If you do need a Realtor,
Please give me a call.
Hi Everyone,
It has been a while since I was last here. All the planning in the world cannot prepare you for illness. Yes, I have had a really bad dose of flu. I don’t mean a bad cold or a few sniffles either. I mean real honest to goodness flu. The can’t get out of bed type of flu when it is really difficult to lift your head off the pillow. I still feel ragged around the edges and my limbs are still sore but I am on the mend.
So things have piled up and they are well behind. Lots of things that needed to be done that just did not get done. Obviously, some of these things just did not matter sufficiently and will get planned into the forward plan and a short exercise in prioritisation will attend to the rest.
I feel very calm and relaxed about it all because I know that after a few very busy days the status quo will resume and all will be well again.
Do I now feel under pressure to catch up. A little but I also know that I am recovering from real flu and the body needs time to recover. So one day at a time and I will delegate more to my husband until I am back to full strength.
Take a look at: www.manageyourtime.org
It will really help you focus upon what is important in the grand scheme of things.
I’ll be back soon.
Cheers
Hi Everyone,
This can be a useful test to really see how your attitude and approach to time management has changed.
Imagine that your cherished home is constructed of wood. It catches fire and you have at most 11 minutes to rescue items form your house that you really need to save from the fire.
Consider what you would do first and then next and so on.
The answers you give will confirm whether you have got your priorities right, whether you are realistic in what can be achieved in the time available and whether you are getting better at setting your goals.
I’ll be back soon with some answers.
MEXICO CITY (AFP) — A suspected drug cartel hitman accused of organizing an attack on the US consulate in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey in October has been arrested by security forces, said President Felipe Calderon.
“The Mexican army has arrested Sigifredo Najera, aka El Canicon, (who was) directly responsible for the torture and killing of soldiers and the attack on the US consulate,” Calderon announced late Friday.
In a boost for Calderon, Mexico on Thursday arrested the son of top Sinaloan kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who is wanted in the United States.
El Mayo runs the ruthless Sinaloa coalition along with the country’s most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman. Last week, Forbes Magazine estimated Guzman’s wealth at $1 billion.
 Il existe plusieurs types de pratiques, que l’on peut cataloguer sous les étiquettes suivantes : l’anulingus perforant (le plus en vogue aujourd’hui) : cette technique consiste en l’attaque frontale du sphincter anal par la langue rigidifiée et pointée en avant. L’humidification et la lubrification de la zone péri-anale est un prérequis souhaitable mais non indispensable. l’anulingus percutant : il s’agit d’une version détournée du précédent. La technique est la même à ceci près que la langue ne doit pas être longiforme, mais au contraire occuper un volume maximal, en particulier sur la zone de contact. On parle également de bélier lingual. l’anulingus glissant : cette technique consiste en l’application de la muqueuse buccale sur le périnée et sa translation dans un sens puis dans l’autre. La répétition de cette opération est un élément déterminant de son succès. Pour ce qui est de l’auto-anulingus, la technique semble être plus envisagée sur le plan théorique que réellement pratiquée. Il semblerait qu’elle nécessite une très grande souplesse, largement supérieure à celle nécessaire pour une autofellation. Le corps doit en effet être d’autant plus plié que la langue doit atteindre un endroit plus éloigné dans ce cas d’une distance égale à l’intégralité de la longueur de la verge, plus l’étendue du périnée; en retranchant cependant la profondeur de la pénétration buccale atteinte lors de l’autofellation, ainsi que la distance de laquelle la langue peut dépasser l’orifice buccal; et en y ajoutant toutefois la longueur de pénétration désirée dans le cas d’un anulingus perforant. http://fr.wikipedia.org
Mitsuko Sôma (相馬 光子, Souma dans certaines traductions) est un personnage fictif de l’univers de Battle Royale ; elle apparaît dans le roman originel, ainsi que dans l’adaptation en manga et le film qui en sont tirés. Après Kazuo Kiriyama, Mitsuko est l’adolescente la plus sanguinaire de l’intrigue, et une des plus machiavéliques, étant prête à tout pour survivre au jeu macabre du “Programme” ; elle est pourtant fréquemment présentée comme une antithèse de Kiriyama, en ce que les autres personnages tendent à les considérer comme deux incarnations du Mal très différentes. Entre les trois formats de la même histoire (roman, manga, film), Mitsuko est également le personnage le plus différent d’une version à l’autre, que ce soit au niveau de la personnalité ou de son histoire personnelle avant le “Programme.” Dans chaque version, elle est présentée comme particulièrement belle, désignée comme la “Fille n°11″ et reçoit comme arme de départ une faucille, une référence symbolique à son rôle de meurtrière sans merci. wikipedia.org
Also following on from “Betting The Other Way”, we continue to see a re-pricing of risk on debt. Note the following text from Bloomberg relating to corporate bond spreads:
“The risk of owning U.S. and European corporate bonds rose the most in 18 months on concern rising mortgage defaults in the U.S. and a slump in Chinese stocks will hurt creditworthiness, according to credit-default swap traders…The iTraxx Crossover Index of 45 European companies jumped 21,000 euros to 201,500 euros at 4:30 p.m. in London, according to Deutsche Bank AG. The index has increased from a record low of 169,000 euros on Feb. 22. The U.S. CDX index surged the most in seven months.”
“The Crossover Index has turned into a gauge of fear,” said Peter Duenas-Brckovitch, head of credit trading at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in London. “Concerns about sub-prime mortgages and a slump in China stocks have fueled the fear, which until a few weeks ago didn’t seem to exist.”
Watch out for hedge fund vulnerability over the coming weeks.
pantry cabinet construction layout It’s time to order the materials for the kitchen cabinets. I’ve spent that last two and a half hours on just the pantry face frames and inset doors. You can see the results in the image.
The gray at the bottom is the area for the toe kick. The outer most portion with the bolded lines represent the frame and the doors are depicted will lighter weight lines.
The diamonds are actually one triangle butted up to another and while they may look like they are just ornamental, they actually server a purpose. The pantry cabinets run floor to ceiling and since the ceilings are 9 feet, that means the pantry cabinets are 104” tall (sitting on top of a 4” toe kick). All of my stock is at most 96”. I needed a way to splice pieces together and so the “decoration” was inserted to allow me seam two pieces together to get 104”.
When I layout all of the cuts to accommodate the pieces, I need 3 sheets of 3/4” bamboo and 2 sheets of 1/4” bamboo. There is a lot of pieces left over and I should use most of those up on the kitchen cabinets … which is probably how I will spend the next two nights.
As mentioned in my post “Betting The Other Way”, safe haven currencies have begun strengthening as geo-political risks begin to mount. Here is a quote direct from today’s Financial Times:
“Rising aversion to other risky strategies, such as the carry trade – where investors sell low-yielding currencies to invest in higher-yielding assets – helped fuel gains for both the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen.
The Swiss franc, which has traditionally been a safe-haven asset at times of heightened risk gained 0.7 per cent against the dollar to SFr1.2215. The yen gained 1.6 per cent to a two-month high of Y118.70 against the dollar, and by 1 per cent to Y157.30 against the euro.”
A couple of weeks back, Mr J-C Trichet of the ECB issued a warning statement referring to one way plays in the foreign exchange markets. He was referring to the widespread use of the Yen carry trade (borrowing Yen at low interest rates and investing this in countries offering higher yields).
The carry trade appears to be a successful bet: as the Yen carry trade grows, the yen becomes weaker as people sell it and the high yield currency strengthens as people buy it. The dynamics re-inforce the profitability of the investment.
The same thing has been happening in the UK property market for some time. Pundits predict rising property prices, people expect property prices to rise so demand increases to “get in before it is too late”, thereby pushing up the prices. The dynamics re-inforce the profitability of the investment.
In both cases, the participants in the markets, be it hedge funds playing the carry trade or buy to let investors buying property, appear to be brimming with confidence. Last week’s increase of Japanese interest rates was dismissed as having negligible impact on the carry trade, as evidenced by the Yen weakening over the course of the week. Similarly, three interest rate rises in seven months seem be to be having limited impact on the UK housing market. Buy to let investors appear to be queuing up despite yields reaching 5 year lows.
Interestingly, the longer this goes on, less and less commentators are willing to predict an end to these one way bets. Those that express concern are quickly called to account by market bulls armed with statistics showing prior claims were unjustified. The cycle becomes self perpetuating as the one way bet removes all obstacles before it.
Except one.
Players in the one way bet will eventually bet, en masse, in the opposite direction. This may be to cash in profits. It may be because of a change in fundamentals or sentiment. What is sure is that these bets have become so large and affect so many people that when they unwind, it will be a messy affair.
One way streets are not designed for two way traffic.
Betting The Other Way
Stephen asks “So…are you suggesting we’re about to see an abrupt reversal in this trend? What do you think might cause this?” We will see a reversal of these one way bets over the next 18 months. Indeed, I would suggest that, under the surface, this mechanism is well underway and there are a [...]
Stephen asks “So…are you suggesting we’re about to see an abrupt reversal in this trend? What do you think might cause this?”
We will see a reversal of these one way bets over the next 18 months. Indeed, I would suggest that, under the surface, this mechanism is well underway and there are a number of factors that may cause the trend to reverse:
1.) Liquidity is decreasing and will decrease further. From a peak of 22% in 2005, liquidity growth has dropped to around 10% ( according to Khuram Chaudhry of Merrill Lynch). So far, this is largely due to central banks increasing interest rates. We have not yet felt the full impact of this, particularly in the UK housing market. Additionally, recent evidence from the US sub-prime housing market and the British credit card/personal loan environment indicate that lenders are taking a big hit as a result of lax lending criteria over the past few years. The offshoot is that financial institutions will tighten lending criteria, further reducing liquidity and will increase bad debts in the process as debtors struggle to either re-pay or re-finance their existing leverage. This could also force disposal of personal assets to cover losses in other areas.
2.) Market confidence will be undermined by increasingly hostile rhetoric between the US and Iran. Both countries appear to be on a collision course. I do not think this will go the whole way, i.e. they will not go to war, but we are going to see things go close. I would not be surprised if this becomes the ‘cuban missile crisis’ of the 21st century. Markets love certainty. The UK equity market bottomed out after the 2001-03 bear market when the US/UK finally invaded Iraq. I posit that uncertainty relating to a US-Iran dispute will shake financial markets, causing a correction but not a crash.
3.) Oil. If 2 is correct, we will see oil over $70 a barrel again and a re-emergence of energy related inflation.
4.) Safe haven currencies. The Swiss Franc has been battered by the carry trade recently. It is at near an all time low with the Euro. Traditionally, when geo-political uncertainty is high, the Swiss Franc is a safe haven. I expect a rapid strengthening of the Swiss Franc over the next 18 months and that this will have impacts for the carry trade. Furthermore, the Japanese economy may be carrying some of its anglo-saxon friends as their debt time bombs begin to unravel. As this becomes a ‘high growth’ economy again, we can expect interest rates to continue to rise and also become a safer haven for investor funds, causing the Yen to strengthen.
5.) Hedge Funds. These firms are highly leveraged and are susceptible should markets begin re-pricing risk. A number of factors could impact here: a large credit default, a strong adverse move in a carry trade currency, collapse in the value of derivatives instruments forcing unwinding of other positions, etc. As seen with LTCM, hedge fund collapses, due to the size of leverage and interconnecvity of these institutions, can have disastrous repercussions across the financial system.
For clarity, I am not predicting the end of the world. I am simply saying that we have lost sight of the fundamentals. A correction is due because there are many one way bets out there that have become self perpetuating due to a combination of cheap money and herd mentality. As a result, we have taken our eye of the ball and not priced risk or assets correctly. Cheap money is being retracted. This has started off the corrective process. Politics will take care of the rest.
China seen producing scaled-down knockoff of Peugeot Hoggar concept
Filed under: , ,
The Peugeot Hoggar Concept from 2003 was a two-seat buggy named for an Algerian desert, designed to be "a sports car for extreme conditions." It had two cast alloy seats in the middle, and two transverse, 180-horsepower diesel engines - one mounted up front, one out back - driving each axle through two semi-automatic gearboxes. The cabin was, as one might expect of a showcar, filled with leather and aluminum.
But the Peugeot Hoggar Concept is not the vehicle you see above - it's a smaller Hoggar knockoff made in China by an as-yet-unknown firm, evidently created by using images of the Hoggar found online. Like the concept, it has four-wheel drive, but that's about where the overlap ends. It's powered by an 800cc Chery QQ engine running through a five-speed gearbox. You can compare and contrast the two cars for yourselves in the gallery below.
Twitter Embargo Leak: 2010 GMC Terrain to achieve 30 mpg highway
Filed under: ,
GMC Terrain spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery
In this day and age of information overload, there are hundreds of opportunities to break an embargo or accidentally publish information that was supposed to remain confidential for a wee bit longer. Such is the case today as General Motors itself has Tweeted a few salient details about the upcoming GMC Terrain, the embargo of which won't be up until April 5, 2009.
According to a PR person from GM, the 2010 GMC Terrain will seat five adults, which isn't all that surprising in and of itself, but it's also expected to deliver 30 miles per gallon on the highway, and that's pretty good for a midsize crossover that can seat your entire brood. In fact, the only other five-seat 'utes that can beat that figure are its cousin, the new 2010 Chevy Equinox, the Ford Escape Hybrid, and Saturn Vue Hybrid.
Interested in knowing more? Hang tight, we're sitting on all the rest of the details and we'll be ready to share on April 5.
Spy Shots: Cadillac CTS Coupe spotted undisguised
Filed under: , ,
The coming Cadillac CTS Coupe has been photographed almost naked, and as with the new Camaro, it is remarkably true to the concept. While this version in white is said to be a vanilla V6 sample, the CTS Coupe should be hot enough to effectively replace the outgoing XLR as the Caddy with the mostest when it's given some wheels large enough to match the body's presence. As for the timeline, the Coupe remains on schedule to arrive next year, preceded by the CTS Sportwagon, which will arrive this June. Hat tip to Matthew!
Next Mazda Miata to be lighter; get smaller engines and electric power steering?
Filed under: , , , , , , ,
Click above for a high-res gallery of 20 years of the Mazda Miata/MX-5
Low weight and greater efficiency might not be the sexiest of selling points for a sports car unless you're a devotee of Lotus founder Colin Chapman's "add lightness" philosophy. Thankfully for those less-is-more enthusiasts, however, Mazda has steadily adhered to that formula with its MX-5 Miata - and now, word from the crew at GoAuto is that company engineers are working even harder to adhere to that design philosophy, with thoughts of smaller, force-fed engines and lighter curb weights dominating discussions for the next iteration of the iconic roadster.
There have long been rumors of a rotary-powered MX-5, but that's probably not in the cards. A modern take on the RX-7 is supposedly being worked up to take a new version of Felix Wankel's whirling dervish of an engine zipping into the future, with the MX-5 getting a newly developed line of four cylinders with direct injection and forced induction (finally!). A heavy-breathing Miata, packing the muscle of a MazdaSpeed3, for instance, might move the neo-MGB into a new realm at the top of its range.
Three words that tend to generate a half-frown on enthusiasts faces are being thrown about in the same sentence as the new Miata: "Electric power steering." We can see the push for the greater energy efficiency that EPS offers, but hopefully Mazda can make the Miata's helm joyously alive instead of Toyota Corolla-style numbness, all shot up with Novocaine (as most such systems tend to be).
Chassis details are also in the realm of conjecture at this point, but with words like "lighter" being shoved at us, we expect some significant re-engineering going on under the skin. That skin, by the way, will likely be more expressive than the rather safe MX-5 we have now, with Mazda's design chief Laurens van den Acker on record as saying the plan is for the car to "be more dramatic and give it some balls."
This year’s Tokyo Motor Show? JAMA Be There (but most of the world’s automakers won’t)
Filed under: , , ,
What if one of the world's preeminent auto nations threw a party and nobody came? That's the question on everyone's minds today as the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) has announced that most of the world's major automakers have decided to sit out this fall's show.
We already knew about the Detroit 3 taking a pass, but now, word from Automotive News is that Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes, Renault, Volkswagen and Volvo will apparently be skipping out as well. In a news conference that JAMA chairman Satoshi Aoki called a "once-in-a-hundred-years crisis," the organization confirmed to media members that just 122 exhibitors will hawk their wares - nearly half of 2007's total of 241. The departure of those manufacturers represents a loss estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars for JAMA and the local economy (if not more), as costs associated with mounting a single show stand often reaches into seven-figures.
Of those 241 parties that still remain, Japan's eight primary automakers have signed on (Daihatsu, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota), and Hyundai will join as well. On the high-end front, only Alpina, Lotus, Ferrari, Maserati, and Porsche have committed.
Rumors swirled as recently as in January that the show might be canceled altogether, but organizers have evidently decided that a scaled-down show is better than no show at all. Other outlets are reporting that JAMA will reduce the event's Makuhari Messe footprint from four show halls to two. Additionally, public days are reportedly shortening up as well, with the original run of October 23 to November 8 being cut down - the show will now close November 4.
VIDEO: Sega’s classic OutRun returning on XBox Live
Sega's OutRun Online Arcade - Click above to watch video after the jump
With many worried that government regulations will soon strangle the concept of having fun in an actual car, it's convenient that game makers are developing more ways to have fun with virtual cars. SEGA is updating that old arcade classic OutRun with the latest in automaker metal, and the new game will arrive as OutRun Online Arcade on XBox Live Arcade and the Euro-version PlayStation Network.
Up to six players can play three different modes on 15 U.S. tracks while driving any of ten Ferraris, which is a much better selection than the original's only option: a Ferrari Testarossa convertible. Imagine Formula D in a Dino or Enzo and you're pretty close. But even Formula D doesn't offer you this: "If you impress your girlfriend enough in Heart Attack Mode, you will receive special requests." Okay... For U.S. customers, the game will be out June 30th on XBox Live Arcade, but for now you can check out gameplay video of this updated oldie after the jump.
VIDEO: AutoblogGreen tries out for the Fiesta Movement
So, applications for Ford's Fiesta Movement closed last night, and AutoblogGreen got its entry in just under the buzzer. We're nothing if not slackers waiting for a deadline. With a few Lego props (our models didn't go into this much detail, though), a camera and iMovie, we thought we'd make some promises to Ford on how we'd treat their car should they give it to us for half a year as part of the Fiesta promotion. We think we covered everything: pirates vs. ninja, paparazzi, Yoda. Yup, that's about it. Check out the video after the jump and then watch more video entries for the competition over on YouTube.
Whither Suburbia? Virginia outlaws cul-de-sacs in face of increased traffic
Filed under: , , ,
Virginia lawmakers are taking a metaphorical battering ram to suburban cul-de-sacs, those little dead-end roundabouts that are almost all adorned with a yellow sign saying "No Outlet." Caught out by spiraling maintenance and development costs, the Washington Post reports that legislators are now mandating that the state will only maintain new subdivision roadways that meet its revised requirements for narrower dimensions and increased connectivity. That maintenance includes not only things like pothole patches and striping, but also plowing in winter, meaning that the state's new laws will carry very real consequences for planners and developers who choose not to comply.
The rise of cul-de-sacs occurred when suburban city planners and private developers decided it was better to have a few roads act as central spines instead of connecting all roads in a grid. Unfortunately, the result has been that the large thoroughfares connecting all those cul-de-sacs suffer from traffic jams, high maintenance costs, as well as a constant need for widening as populations increase. They're also annoying to ambulance drivers who can't take alternate routes while responding to an emergency because side streets off of main arteries often don't connect, resulting in longer response and transport times.
Suburban dwellers are, of course, against the change. They chose cul-de-sacs for particular reasons, notably because they are generally safer for children and quieter than connected streets. Cul-de-sac homeowners are worried that if connector streets are added, speeding commuters will start flying through their formerly safe developments like they do on the few connecting roads currently exist.
While there is little that homeowners can do now to change the rules, urban planners and designers are looking at making more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly subdivisions with enough connectivity that there isn't just one road that's either clear or gridlocked. Said one council member, "We're trying to create flexibility... instead of a one size fits all."
Kids, play in the streets while you can, because the times, they are a-changin'...
Oh benevolent gods of Linden, please let me have a decent time in the grid tonight, amen
Today, a record of my first successful evening in the grid in over a week: first a visit to my friends at The Art Loft, then a trip to fashion complex Amicitia, then finally a dash to Idea City to try out their new open-source "tourHUD" object. Many photos included!
Reminder: Party at my place this Friday, both Chicago and Second Life
Just a reminder, that ITG's first-ever "mesh" event is coming up this Friday! For those who don't know, that's when I throw a party both in Second Life and in my apartment in Chicago, using Skypecast and a streaming server connection to keep both parties communicating. Photos and lots of details in today's entry!
Second Life's infrastructure: Yep, it still sucks
Wow -- nine days now and I STILL can't get a decent connection when logging into Second Life. Today, some screenshots of what the grid looks when everything's going wrong, as well as a personal editorial of sorts about how important it is to pick the right computer when signing up.
Oh Lord, I've been landshopping again (part 1)
Yes, it's true -- I'm thinking of doubling or even tripling the total amount of land I now own, even while I'm constantly bitching about performance issues these days. Here, a detailed explanation of why, along with lots of photos of various plots of land I've been looking at.
Question: Do you know of any work/pay private sims?
Hey, I've got a question; does anyone know of any "work/pay" sims out there, by which some of the sim's costs are covered individually by members, some generated through group labor? Click through for all the details!
More Accurately Measure The Success Of YouTube Clips
Here’s an idea for an experiment: watch a few episodes of the old Monty Python show with some friends, and you’ll probably notice that different sketches hit and miss for different people.  User-generated content seen by a diverse audience is even more subject to a range of opinions, so YouTube’s now helping contributors determine how their clips are doing.
A post on the YouTube Blog describes its newest feature as “a ‘Community’ tab that allows you to see how YouTube users engage with your content over time and depending on their geographic location.  You can see total numbers related to ratings, comments, and favorites (or all of them combined), as well as the average number of actions the community takes per view of your video.”
The post then continues, “For example, if it looks like your rating is 3/5 stars, but the average Japanese viewer is giving you 2, while the French tend to give you 5, you’ll now know where your real fans are located.”
If you’ve been using YouTube to promote your site and/or products, this could prove to be an invaluable targeting tool.  And if you haven’t, it represents one more reason to start.
Like most of the stuff Google puts out, access to the Community tab doesn’t cost a thing.
Clear enough for us, but does it matter?
The WSJ reports a clear statement from the Chairman of the Fed as the “one message” he wants to get across to the assembled Senators on the Banking Committee: “Senator, if there’s one message I’d like to leave you, it’s that if we’re going to have a strong recovery, it’s got to be on the back [...]
The WSJ reports a clear statement from the Chairman of the Fed as the “one message” he wants to get across to the assembled Senators on the Banking Committee:
“Senator, if there’s one message I’d like to leave you, it’s that if we’re going to have a strong recovery, it’s got to be on the back of a stabilization of financial system,” he said. “And it’s basically black and white. If we stabilize the financial system adequately, we’ll get a reasonable recovery. It might take some time. If we don’t stabilize the financial system, we’re going to founder for some time.”
We couldn’t agree more, except we would frame the choice in even starker terms. We hope this marks an end to the incoherence of the administration on critical aspects of regulating the financial system, but unlike the (hapless?) Tim Geithner, Ben Bernanke doesn’t work for the (hapless?) administration.
All of a sudden, a few things have changed. Democrat businessmen of high repute have said that Obama’s economic plans are nuts. And evidently Democratic Congressmen have begun to hear from back home that their constituents aren’t buying into the largesse that would be largely coming from their own pockets. AP:
in Congress, Obama’s budget plans were meeting resistance. Sen. Kent Conrad, the chairman of the Budget Committee called the track of future deficits “unsustainable” and singled out Obama’s proposal for adding $634 billion in health care spending over the next 10 years. “Some of us have a real pause about the notion of putting substantially more money into the health care system when we’ve already got a bloated system,” said Conrad, D-N.D.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, testifying before Conrad’s committee, also encountered blunt questions about the administration’s plans for shoring up the nation’s banks. He reiterated the administration’s goal to lay out a private-public partnership to make up to $1 trillion in financing available to help banks clear their books of toxic, mortgage-related assets that have led to a national credit freeze. Geithner hinted more money might be required beyond the existing $700 billion financial rescue fund. “We certainly can start with the resources we have,” he said.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., played down talk that Democrats would consider a second economic stimulus bill. “I know that people have made suggestions that we should be ready to do something, but I really would like to see this stimulus package play out,” Pelosi said. “It’s just not something that, right now, is in the cards”…
(It certainly hasn’t hurt that some of the zombie banks don’t want any more government investment as well.) Meanwhile, Obama himself stressed today that there would be zero tax hikes prior to 2010, and that — get this — now fully 97% of individuals and small businesses would be unaffected by the hikes, up from 95% just the other day. We’ll just have to see what the expiration date is on the President’s most recent policy promulgations.
The good…
  • Jerry Codinera and Vergel Meneses might join the Burger King coaching staff. That’s welcome addition to the flagging PBA star power.
  • It’s possible that Mikee Romero will bring his own team to the PBA in the future.
  • We have not seen the last of Nadurata. Welcome back sir!
And the bad…
  • Since Burger King lost a majority player in Romero, who’ll take his ownership? My guess is, it will be MVP. That will make MVP a majority holder of Burger King. He’ll own virtually teams directly. Get ready for more outrageous swaps.
  • The PBA lost a passionate basketball team owner in Mikee Romero.
  • This uncertainty could somehow affect players’ play. Judging by Yeng’s statement, he’s clueless as to what is happening inside the management level. For sure, his players too. Trouble up in the management could result to Arwind Santos jacking up more brick three-point shot, Arboleda shooting more open, err, often, than required, etc.
The final words from Mikee…
“Unfortunately the dreams and the winning must come to an end as my group and the Burger King company did not come to terms.
“Much of my attention will now be devoted to the amateurs again, along with my other passion which is the Filipino martial arts.
“In ending I assure everyone that one of these days, I would again rejoin the PBA and fight again the battles which I truly enjoy. More power to the PBA.”
From my Sis, Beth Celis.
What’s up guys? Nice to be back here writing, it’s been a while since I wrote an entry and since the playoffs are already nearing, what a way timely way to return e?
Anyway, now that it’s only about 1 month away from the post season, I’m here to talk to about the possible playoff matchups, who’s gonna be in it, the possible upsets that might happen and the seeding after the post season.
Right now, here’s a look at the current positioning (March 16 2009)
East
1) Cleveland
2) Boston (3.5 GB)
3) Orlando (4 GB)
4) Atlanta (14.5 GB)
5) Miami (17.5 GB)
6) Philadelphia (19 GB)
7) Detroit (19.5 GB)
8) Milwaukee/Chicago (23.5 GB)
Outside looking in: Charlotte, New Jersey and New York (25 GB)
West
1) Los Angeles
2) San Antonio (8.5 GB)
3) Houston (11 GB)
4) Denver (11.5 GB)
5) New Orleans (11.5 GB)
6) Portland (12.0 GB)
7) Utah (12.5 GB)
8) Dallas (13.5 GB)
Outside looking in: Phoenix (17.5 GB)
The Analysis
In the East, it’s basically Cleveland, Boston, Orlando then everybody else. The top three is secured, with Cleveland having the top spot and Boston and Orlando fighting for number 2. With KG still out, I don’t think they’re gonna catch up with Crabs, we’ve seen how vulnerable Boston is without Kevin Garnett (They’re 6-6 after KG was injured) and with about 16 games left in the season, and a playoff spot secured, I don’t think the Celtics would want to rush KG’s recovery right now which leaves the Magic a clear chance to cut into number 2.
Regardless of who lands what in the top 3, I think the team that you would really want to avoid right now in the East, regardless of what position they’re in, is still the Boston Celtics. Number 6 (Philadelphia) and number 7 (Detroit) should in to where Orlando will land, in the past 3 seasons, the Pistons have Orlando’s number.. which would make my statement for them to look forward to Orlando more realistic.
As I’ve said before to my friends, if Cleveland lands the top spot, upsets will happen
You ask me why? Well, while I believe the Crabs are capable of beating the defending champions, IMO, they’re still vulnerable to losing to lower seeded teams. The Bulls (Who I think will beat the Bucks for number 8) has all the tools and the talent to match up with Cleveland that’s if Luol Deng gets healthy and Kirk Hinrich gets his head straight. If they somehow gets past the Bulls (Easier route would be Milwaukee) they’re in for a showdown between the winner of the Hawks/Heat series which is capable of beating anyone in a playoff series.. not named Boston.
Also, if the Cavs get a hold of that number 1 seed in the East, Orlando gets to seat on number 2 or 3, which will eventually set them up against the Pistons. Last time I checked, Dwight Howard and the Magic doesn’t like playing against the Pistons.
Another possible thing that might happen is that if the Celtics falls to number 3 and Orlando gets past the first round, we will be watching the Celtics team play a very good Magic team without homecourt advantage, and we all know how Boston values homecourt advantage (Just ask Cleveland and the Hawks from last year)
But then again, it all depends on the Crabs getting the top seed in the East. It might be a little odd for me to say this but, come on LeBron, make it happen.
On the Western side of things, it’s basically the Lakers and everybody. After the 8.5 game separation from LA (1) to San Antonio (2), it’s only a 5 game separation from San Antonio (2) to Dallas (8). Which makes the positioning here in the West a little bit more interesting.
Unlike in the East, the 8 teams that will be playing in the playoffs in the West are secure. And yes, I am informed that Phoenix is only 4 games outside the Playoffs, but I just don’t see them making the Playoffs this year.. and I don’t Steve Kerr having a job this summer too.
So what now? I think I know what the other teams are thinking, try to move up as much as possible and avoid Los Angeles in the first round.
Houston, Denver, Portland and New Orleans are all battling for the 2 remaining slots in the top 4. The Jazz, who were in there a couple of days ago are now down to number 7 after losing three straight, they are only 1 game ahead of Dallas and is in danger of having a first round affair against L.A.
Houston, surprisingly, are playing better without Knee-mac and should they get a first round playoff affair with Portland, with them having homecourt advantage, they could probably finally break out of the first round.. what’s funny is, they’ll be doing it without Tracy McGrady (Who still haven’t experienced playing deep into the playoffs)
Whoever takes on the Enver Nuggets at the Playoffs would be lucky. I think they’re easily the softest team in the West right now and Carmelo would still be dreaming of how it is to play outside the first round. They might not get swept (Not like last year) but I think whichever team lands a match up with them on the first round would be very very happy.
If the playoffs were to start today..
.. with that positioning, here would be my predictions
East
(1) Crabs over (8) Bulls in 7 games or (1) Cleveland over (8) Bucks in 4 games
(2) Celtics over (7) Pistons in 5 games
(3) Magic over (6) Sixers in 4 games
(4) Hawks over (5) Heat in 7 games
West
(1) Lakers over (8) Mavs in 5 games
(2) San Antonio over (7) Utah in 6 games
(3) Houston over (6) Portland in 6 games
(5) New Orleans over (4) Denver in 6 games
That’s it. I think I could be doing this weekly until the playoffs begin. ’til then. Adios
POWER RANKINGS (FEB 28 – MAR 15)
Hail all HOOPSters! This is the first installment of my Power Rankings for the 2009 Fiesta Cup! In case you didn’t notice, Macmac Cardona was my preferred top player of the Philippine Cup.
Why?
In case you didn’t hear the boos… in case you didn’t see the finals of the Philippine Cup and in case you still don’t hear the boos he encounters EVERY freaking time he touches the ball in the 2009 FIESTA CUP, NO ONE was more instrumental, controversial, and sensational than what Cardona did for his franchise and for the league.
(As much as I want Willie Miller to own another MVP title, the Philippine Cup semis and finals proved to be a ratings grabber because of Captain Hook gave his all on and off the court.)
However, new conference… means new adventures. Unfortunately, Cardona is nowhere near MVP levels in this conference. Actually, the entry of imports has made a lot of players crap in the sidelines and basically bench warm.
NOW ON WITH THE SHOW!
The Rules: In this conference, there is one entry that would change my Power Rankings. Sure, you know that it is an addition of the five main stat categories (PTS + REBS + AST + STL + BLK). But the point system is based upon the PBFANTASY’S point system (see www.pbfantasy.com). Also we have to factor how these players play their minutes effectively.
And now…
The TURNOVERS play an important role.
GAME STARTS NOW!
THE FIRST PART: OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
THE BENEFITS: A no-explanation enumeration of the players that could have performed better to see a bunch of words across their names. (I won’t even bold their names)
40 PAUL ARTADI (GINEBRA)
39 MACMAC CARDONA (TNT)
38 BEAU BELGA (BURGER KING)
37 PAOLO HUBALDE (BARAKO BULL)
36 OLSEN RACELA (SMB)
35 JR QUINAHAN (BURGER KING)
34 RYAN ARANA (RAIN OR SHINE)
33 ROGER YAP (PUREFOODS)
32 JOSEPH YEO (STA. LUCIA)
31 GARY DAVID (BURGER KING)
30 DENOK MIRANDA (STA. LUCIA)
29 GABBY ESPINAS (BARAKO BULL)
28 JEFF CHAN (BARAKO BULL)
27 ROB WAINWRIGHT (RAIN OR SHINE)
26 JASON CASTRO (TNT)
THE SECOND PART: PACKED IN THE MIDDLE
THE BENEFITS: Measly statements telling people why they ended up in this predicament.
25 RONJAY BUENAFE (COCA-COLA): After a weak Philippine Cup, Buenafe is off to a hot start. His 16.8ppg ranks first in the Tigers’ local scoring department.
24 DORIAN PENA (SMB): The guy barely makes 20 minutes a night but the Big Dawg could still own the league’s bigs with his 12.5ppg and 7.5rpg per night.
23 JAY WASHINGTON (SMB): This spot should be vacated next week when J-Wash continues to trade his uniform for flip-flops because of an injury.
22 WESLEY GONZALES (SMB): SMB’s injury-plagued lineup has its own pros and cons. For Wesley, playing more and getting 10.8ppg and 7.5rpg is a bar none upside.
21 JOE DEVANCE (ALASKA): While he doesn’t enjoy the slashed minutes he has right now, the biggest consolation he has is the fact that he is seriously getting the goods.
20 WILLIE MILLER (ALASKA): After a crappy import, the Thriller should be pleased now that Rosell Ellis is taking away the double teams thrown at him. This should improve his stats in a big way.
19 ENRICO VILLANUEVA (PUREFOODS): In their last few games, he has been delivering the goods missed by their “other” offensive providers.
18 JAY-R REYES (RAIN OR SHINE): As the Painters’ chief muscle inside the “paint”, the ex-UP Maroon is getting mauled day in and day out… but his 13.7ppg and 8.3rpg is saying otherwise.
17 LA TENORIO (ALASKA): Yes, the coming of age of LA Tenorio’s game has begun. Add the fact that he is the only point guard in the team that Tim Cone trusts, those heavy minutes should produce more big time stats.
16 DONDON HONTIVEROS (SMB): I guess Hontiveros is saving his best for the playoffs. Still, his numbers are nowhere near “patsy” levels. His all around game and leadership is keeping the injury-plagued Beermen afloat.
15 DON ALLADO (PUREFOODS): For those who taught Don Allado’s game will sink once he joins the big man-infected Giant squad… you’re kinda right. Brian Hamilton’s streak of off-nights is making Allado stints possible (yes B-Ham had one good game… one… good… game) but once Purefoods skids out of the standings, Allado is an explosive scoring import away from bench-warming hell (someone will definitely join Rich Alvarez and Richard Yee).
14 JAMES YAP (PUREFOODS): In his first game, Big Game torched the hoop for 33 points. And then B-Ham’s inability to become an offensive threat crushed Yap’s vulnerability. Although he rebounded from that third game… his 3 points wasn’t a pretty sight for all the people that picked him up in their rosters.
13 WYNNE ARBOLEDA (BURGER KING): Okay… I see eyebrows rising. Hear me out. Arboleda is averaging 7.3ppg, 4.5rpg, 5.5apg, and 1spg. Yes, I know that’s nothing special. But fathom the fact that he only averages 20.5 minutes per night? Wonder if Yeng Guiao would use him more often? I guess that could happen now since he has regained the reality that he is the boss’ son-in-law.
12 SUNDAY SALVACION (GINEBRA): Jump in glee Ginebra fans! Uhurm. Okay, just like Wesley Gonzales, Salvacion’s name came into picture when Mark Caguioa, Junthy Valenzuela, and the rest of the BGK crew are suffering from injuries. While I would have wanted for the Kings to get Allado from that 3-way deal, Salvacion is getting the spoils from all of the Rod Nealy and Jayjay Helterbrand double-teaming.
11 TONY dela CRUZ (ALASKA): This season has been a great confidence builder for the ex-Turbo Charger. Since his entry from Shell, Alaska has been nothing but mean to the once double-double churning forward. Now comfortable in the system, TDC is getting major minutes from Cone.
THE LAST PART: THE TOP TEN
10 KERBY RAYMUNDO (PUREFOODS): I wonder how long it took for Kerby to snatch Jondan Salvador’s number? With all the big men in their lineup, I am seriously thinking that this is Salvador’s last PBA stint as a Giant. Anywho, sure Raymundo’s numbers are great and he should be a few notches higher. HOWEVER he leads all locals in turnovers with 5 per game. Sure, Tiras Wade and Rod Nealy own more, but they usually touch the ball every time their team draws possession. For a guy like Raymundo to average more TO’s than James Yap… this needs to change.
9 MARLOU AQUINO (STA. LUCIA): I have a friend named Chrisangelo who could be tuning in at every freaking SLR game because he couldn’t believe that this lanky underachieving, waste of salary cap space, giant is turning out to be an awesome shock this conference. Sure, Dennis Espino would probably displace him any moment now but his league-leading 3.3bpg is certainly a welcome surprise.
8 JAYJAY HELTERBRAND (GINEBRA): Helter has yet to wield his offensive awesomeness in the opening stages of the Fiesta Cup. You could say that with Rod Nealy getting clamps from all sides of the court, now is the time for Jayjay to explode. Until that day comes, you’ll pretty much see the Kings struggling past the .500 mark. However, the return of his assist league-leading ways is a good sign for the “other” Bandanna Brother. Sheesh… if only Mark Caguioa is playing right now…
7 JONAS VILLANUEVA (SMB): Just when you think the first Fiesta Cup Player of the Week’s 15 minutes are up… he finds ways to make you think otherwise. Performing like a dog in heat is nothing new for Jonas… in his UAAP days. Even then we falls behind to guys like Tenorio, Tang, and others in terms of popularity. Here in the PBA, he stuck around a team filled with stars for an opportunity to shine. With 15.8ppg, 5.3rpg, 4.5apg and 1spg in almost 30 minutes a game… now is the moment he has been yearning upon.
6 JIMMY ALAPAG (TNT): Unlike his teammates, the Mighty Mouse remains unfazed of the dangerous “championship syndrome”. This attacks teams that just won the championship, making them do their usual games a couple of steps below their normal levels. Perhaps this was the reason why TNT is in the deep end of the standings. However Alapag is doing his best to keep his team at bay with him registering great numbers. Until Cardona, Ranidel de Ocampo, Ali Peek, Harvey Carey, and Jared Dillinger edges out their respective slumps, Alapag is tasked to carry an unenviable chore to creep up wins for their squad.
5 ASI TAULAVA (COCA-COLA): Until this day, the Tigers seems to lack the respect that was handed out to the other teams even if they have this big-time mammoth in their arsenal. Why? The coaching chaos and a ragtag collection of unwanted veterans and introverted youngsters are the factors keeping this team from ever regaining their once-populous fanbase. So the only solution here is to win games, which Asi is trying hard to attain day in and day out. His 12.5rpg leads all locals in terms of rebounds.
4 GABE NORWOOD (RAIN OR SHINE): Punishing his opponents with his all-around play, Norwood’s ability to play all positions makes him extremely valuable for the Painters’ first crack for a plum. Unlike his partner Solomon Mercado, the fire in his game has yet to go off to unruly proportions (although how could we forget the quarterfinal match up they had against the Realtors where their errant behavior cost the team a chance for the title). In 3 games so far, his 14.3ppg, 9.3rpg, 3.3apg, and 1.7spg makes him a very prized entity for Rain or Shine.
3 ALEX CABAGNOT (COCA-COLA): Here’s another shocker that should make people jump at their seats. But then again, maybe you know what I’m talking about. Just like Tenorio, Cabagnot is a point guard that gets a lot of playing time in his roster. However, Kenneth Duremdes seems to overact in this department by giving him 40 minutes per game. Sure, Duremdes has a lot of point guards that could share his minutes (Kelani Ferreria was recently added to their lineup), but check out his stats: he gives out 16.3ppg, 4.8rpg, 6.0apg, and 1.8spg. But what’s great about him is that he rarely commits any turnovers… something that makes him superbly important to their cause.
2 KELLY WILLIAMS (STA. LUCIA): Machine Gun Kelly’s numbers dipped after a weak showing at the hands of the Kings, limiting his numbers to a dud 3 points and 7-rebound effort. However, his mere presence brings fear to SLR’s enemies, making him the uncrowned second import of the franchise. And just like a snap of a finger, he quickly overcame a crappy game to produce a 21-point, 13-rebound explosion against the Boosters. If he could just contain his bad games to a respectable output then Williams should be a great catch for all PBFANATICS out there.
1 ARWIND SANTOS (BURGER KING): Ranking numero in the rankings is… the SPIDERMAN! For some insane reason, playing in Yeng Guiao’s tutelage is making Santos to go out and play more. With Guiao’s dreaded play hard or think hard… in the far side of the bench (recently received by Shawn Daniels), Santos is claiming boards, blocking shots, and dumping deuces in superb fashion! Currently Santos is leading the Titans in points with 19.3ppg, ranks second behind Daniels in rebounds (9.0rpg), has 1.5apg, 0.8spg, and owns 1.5bpg. The sad thing though is that they are currently in the middle of the pack after an erratic start. Knowing Guiao’s habit to shake up his personnel after they fail to bring in the W’s, Santos’ rank-leading ways are in serious jeopardy.
The Power Rankings should return in about two weeks. Why? Ummm… I think work will bum me out before I get my usual write-ups to even get a title!
Yes, that is the biggest reason why I am barely visible in the webpage. Yes it sucks… but I think I have to earn money to have money to spend on.
Yeah… basically that’s it.
So… until my next installment…
I am seeing more and more one way bets out there. Here is another one relating to the UK housing market.
David Blanchflower commented earlier in the year on how immigration from Eastern Europe was reducing inflationary pressures by keeping wages low thanks to increased labour supply. Furthermore, as wage increases are minimised so too is the pressure to raise interest rates.
This, in turn, helps to increase aggregate demand (low rates + more people = more demand) and create more jobs thus encouraging more immigration. A rise in net immigration will also increase demand for rental properties and mortgages thereby stimulating demand for housing and house prices. There is therefore a double whammy to the housing market as property prices increase and rates are kept relatively low.
What you have to remember, though, is that this current wave of immigration is very different to the waves in the 1950s and 1970s that brought large Afro-Caribbean, Indian and Pakistani communities to Britain. First of all, unlike Asia and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe is nearby and labour can move more freely across Europe since the advent of the EU, secondly, transport and communications are much better and cheaper than they were 50 years ago.
It is therefore possible for this wave of immigration to flow out as quickly as it flowed in. If employment opportunities in the UK trended downwards due to a decrease in consumption, it could trigger an exodus to European markets offering better prospects, e.g. Germany. A reduction in consumption could hit employees in the catering, entertainment, retail and domestic help markets. These are all areas that have benefited from this wave of immigration.
The consequences of the reversal would be a reduction in demand for housing and also a decrease of supply in the labour market. What matters on the latter point is whether labour supply decreases quicker than demand. If it does we could get decreasing consumption, housing demand and increasing wages all at the same time.
At best, the impact is a reduced demand for housing and therefore lower rents or lower house price growth. At worst, wage inflation gathers pace and interest rates increase as well. The latter case is somewhat far fetched but who would have believed, 14 years ago, that the house you were scared of buying could triple in value.
Here is the message they left me 4 days ago:
Since then, silence……..
The B Word
The B word in this case is “Bubble” and the location of the bubble is the UK housing market. The B word in this case is “Bubble” and the location of the bubble is the UK housing market.
I have just finished listening to an interview with Fionnuala Earley, the chief economist at Nationwide Building Society, who today announced a return to double digit annual house price inflation.
The reasons cited for continued strength are:
1.) Continued momentum from 2006
2.) Strong ‘Buy To Let’ demand
3.) Dropping buyer enquiries at Estate Agents offset by low supply
What is startling to me is why no one is willing to call a bubble, a bubble.
Firstly, interest rates have increased three times in seven months to 5.25%, a 17% increase in the interest rate burden. Secondly, first time buyers have all but dried up and the market is being propelled by speculative purchasers seeking to earn capital gains. It is already well documented that yields on ‘Buy To Let’ investment properties are now around five year lows and that it is increasingly difficult to cover interest payments on mortgages using rental income. Thirdly, supply is low, not just due to planning restrictions, but because high prices have disincentivised people from moving home (see this post).
As we saw in the US, it can take years for weaknesses in lending standards to surface and impact on the wider economy. The Telegraph states that “Britain is now one of the most heavily indebted countries in the world…. Total loans amount to 162pc of GDP, compared with 111pc in the US and just 27pc in Poland.” Perhaps this is an indication that below the surface of a buoyant market driven by speculation, cracks will start to emerge.
Watch this space…
As mentioned in my post “Betting The Other Way”, safe haven currencies have begun strengthening as geo-political risks begin to mount. Here is a quote direct from today’s Financial Times:
“Rising aversion to other risky strategies, such as the carry trade – where investors sell low-yielding currencies to invest in higher-yielding assets – helped fuel gains for both the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen.
The Swiss franc, which has traditionally been a safe-haven asset at times of heightened risk gained 0.7 per cent against the dollar to SFr1.2215. The yen gained 1.6 per cent to a two-month high of Y118.70 against the dollar, and by 1 per cent to Y157.30 against the euro.”
My Top 10 for the 20,10s
1.) Cities becoming more important than countries 2.) Minimal asset price growth 3.) Popular backlash against environmentally friendly policies 4.) Issues based wars 5.) Emergence of co-operation 6.) Cast your mind back to South Africa. Think Mandela, think Biko, de Klerk et al. Think back to the era of apartheid. Some people liked it and some people didn’t. In the case of my parents in law, they hated it and decided to stop buying South African apples as an act of protest.
Their logic was simple. The apples come from South Africa. South Africa believes in apartheid. We do not believe in apartheid. We will punish South Africa economically by not buying South African apples. In those days, the apple was a vehicle for attacking an issue.
Today, it is the apple that is the issue and it has lots:
Is it ‘Organic’?
Is it ‘Fair Trade’?
Were the seeds genetically modified?
Was it transported by cart, truck, boat or plane?
Was it grown in a field or in a greenhouse?
What pesticides were used?
Does it come packaged in plastic and bubble wrap?
The number of issues is so overwhelming that it hurts my head just reading them. We seem to have come so far in our knowledge of everything that we crave a return to the most simple of things. An apple that is just an apple. An apple that grew on a tree because a bird dropped a seed that was nurtured by the rain and the sun.
Just like the one that fell on Newton’s head.
A couple of weeks back, Mr J-C Trichet of the ECB issued a warning statement referring to one way plays in the foreign exchange markets. He was referring to the widespread use of the Yen carry trade (borrowing Yen at low interest rates and investing this in countries offering higher yields).
The carry trade appears to be a successful bet: as the Yen carry trade grows, the yen becomes weaker as people sell it and the high yield currency strengthens as people buy it. The dynamics re-inforce the profitability of the investment.
The same thing has been happening in the UK property market for some time. Pundits predict rising property prices, people expect property prices to rise so demand increases to “get in before it is too late”, thereby pushing up the prices. The dynamics re-inforce the profitability of the investment.
In both cases, the participants in the markets, be it hedge funds playing the carry trade or buy to let investors buying property, appear to be brimming with confidence. Last week’s increase of Japanese interest rates was dismissed as having negligible impact on the carry trade, as evidenced by the Yen weakening over the course of the week. Similarly, three interest rate rises in seven months seem be to be having limited impact on the UK housing market. Buy to let investors appear to be queuing up despite yields reaching 5 year lows.
Interestingly, the longer this goes on, less and less commentators are willing to predict an end to these one way bets. Those that express concern are quickly called to account by market bulls armed with statistics showing prior claims were unjustified. The cycle becomes self perpetuating as the one way bet removes all obstacles before it.
Except one.
Players in the one way bet will eventually bet, en masse, in the opposite direction. This may be to cash in profits. It may be because of a change in fundamentals or sentiment. What is sure is that these bets have become so large and affect so many people that when they unwind, it will be a messy affair.
One way streets are not designed for two way traffic.
Stephen asks “So…are you suggesting we’re about to see an abrupt reversal in this trend? What do you think might cause this?”
We will see a reversal of these one way bets over the next 18 months. Indeed, I would suggest that, under the surface, this mechanism is well underway and there are a number of factors that may cause the trend to reverse:
1.) Liquidity is decreasing and will decrease further. From a peak of 22% in 2005, liquidity growth has dropped to around 10% ( according to Khuram Chaudhry of Merrill Lynch). So far, this is largely due to central banks increasing interest rates. We have not yet felt the full impact of this, particularly in the UK housing market. Additionally, recent evidence from the US sub-prime housing market and the British credit card/personal loan environment indicate that lenders are taking a big hit as a result of lax lending criteria over the past few years. The offshoot is that financial institutions will tighten lending criteria, further reducing liquidity and will increase bad debts in the process as debtors struggle to either re-
